The Golden Pints Beer Awards 2010

The 2009 Golden Pint Awards were a success so we have decided we'd have some fun with them again this year. It couldn't be simpler, just fill in your answers to the categories below. You can do this in the comments on someone’s blog post, write them in your own blog or email them to Andy or me and we’ll post them for you. Do it any time between now and New Year's Eve.

Feel free to do a runner-up and a winner for each category (or some honourable mentions) and link to blog posts if you’ve written about winners before. For the open category you can choose whatever you want: it could be bargain of the year, night out of the year, barman of the year, cooking lager of the year, best beer photo, worst beer, anything you want. If there are any categories that you don’t want to give a winner for then just skip it.

It’s a bit of fun to see out the end of 2010 with a few nominations of what’s been the best of beer from the previous year.

  15. Hahahaha oops! I love that our Wineyard Facebook Fans are voting for us by copying and pasting ALL of my votes, making it look dead suspicious! Here's hoping they get counted anyway. Perhaps we can 'fix' the whole lot if we get enough votes in. ;)

  26. So it seems The Wineyard has a good following online!!

Really interesting to see some of these winners.

But Ben, most overrated beer?! Come on! IPA is a moving target, that's how White Shield was one time, just like Greene King is how IPA was at one point. Now IPA is something completely different and there's a big differentiation between US and British IPA. Keep drinking it and you'll get there :) Even better, put some in the cellar for a couple of years and see how it ages.

  28. I'm not even judging it as an IPA Mark, I'm just considering it as a beer in general - I can't find anything at all to enjoy about it. It's bland and boring every time I taste it.

I've put some away in a dark drawer to see what happens, but I'm not holding out much hope anymore. Other people have told me they don't 'get' White Shield either. Just not my cup of tea I guess! :)

    ReplyDelete
  29. Fair enough, Ben. With age it does take on different characters, so it'll be interesting to see what you think. I've got a case at home to see what happens up to about 5 years.

For me White Shield is complex if you want it to be or it's simple if you don't; there's bitterness but it's not over-whelming and it's backed up with a solid malt body. It's not one to make us jump up and down with excitement like some of these US or extreme bottles do, but I still find it interesting. Have you had a P2 from the same brewery? That's DEFINITELY one to look for!

  32. I can see where Ben is coming from with White Shield. I have been drinking this on and off for years now and while it is pleasant enough, I too have struggled to see what all the fuss is about.

Indeed White Shield can be terrifically dull - perhaps the low point came at a Pete Brown hosted tasting in Manchester a year or so ago. After he had waxed lyrical the bottles were duly opened and it was quite amusing to see him continue to try and big up the glasses of dull brown glop we were then presented with.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I was rather impressed with it in bottle recently at a do in London.

Less so - much less so on cask in Manchester last week.

  42. I tried to post this yesterday but my computer got the better of me.

Best UK Draught Beer: the cask of Ola Dubh 30 they had at The Rake at £3 a half - bargain. (special mention for the Dark Star Green Hopped IPA - how can this be 6.5%?)

Best UK Bottled Beer: It's a cheat really as it's a collaboration but it is bottled in the UK - Mikkeller BrewDog I Hardcore You. Such a fantastic exercise in dry hopping, exotic fruits and complexity.

Best Overseas Draught Beer: Probably Stone Ruination IPA in that the half I bought at The Rake, for the eye-watering amount of £4.50, lasted about 5 mins as it was so good.

Best Overseas Bottled Beer: Goose Island Bourbon County Stout. Though Stone Sublimely Self Righteous Ale lead me to explore so many more beers this year, I think on that of all the beers I've had I was most taken aback by the madness of BCS.

Best Overall Beer: I Hardcore You - I'd drink it every day if I could.

Best Pumpclip or Label: Bashah Reserve by Johanna Basford - the detail is stunning yet simple

Best UK Brewery: The Kernel - S.C.A.NS IPA, Pale Ale Nelsin Sauvin, London Export 1890, Baltic Porter - all great beers and I still haven't tried the Imperial Russian.

Best Overseas Brewery: Stone Brewing Co. but if he had a brewery Mikkeller.

Pub/Bar of the Year: The Cask Pub & Kitchen. Great staff, takeout offers and what a selection.

Beer Festival of the Year: Didn't attend any but will rectify next year (I have good excuses for missing them - honest)

Supermarket of the Year: by price - Asda, by selection - Waitrose, by individual line - Tesco's for Tesco's Finest American Double IPA 3 for £4

Independent Retailer of the Year: Utobeer for choice, Mr Lawrence's for convenience (and for stocking, amongst others, The Kernel, Marble, Thornbridge & Dark Star)

Online Retailer of the Year: Dead heat between beermerchants.com and mybrewerytap.com

Best Beer Book or Magazine: The Flavour Thesaurus(this was my choice before I read your post Mark). It's not about beer but great to help understand what flavours work together. It also gives real insite into what things actually taste of. Buy it.

Best Beer Blog or Website: Are You Tasting the Pith?

Best Beer Twitterer: TheBeerCast, it's about beer

Best Brewery Online: BrewDog - their website is pretty much what you need, info, blog & shop

Food and Beer Pairing of the Year: Thomas Hardy Ale and Gu chocolate souffle pudding. Special mention to The Draft House burger with foie gras, cheese and bacon paired with DFH 90 minute IPA.

In 2011 I’d Most Like To…: get a blog up and running

    Open Category: You Choose

Best Brewer: Mikkel Borg Bjergsø - some of my most memorable beer moments this year have come from drinking Mikkeller beer and he doesn't really fit into your categories. US Alive, Black, Beer Geek Brunch Weasel Bourbon, the six different available on draught at The Cask at the end of November, Santa's Little Helper 2009. Seriously clever beer and always challenging your perceptions of what you like in beer.
Best venue for beer & food: The Draft House. Great food, amazing selction of beer on draught and by bottle and really good staff.

  43. Though I'm from Denmark, I can do most of these. I haven't been to Britain in 2010, so my choice for UK draught is from a limited range. But a good range.

Best UK Bottled Beer: Thomas Hardy Ale 1982 (Moor Fusion)
Best Overseas Draught Beer: De Ranke Pere Noël (Indslev Hvede IPA)

Best Overall Beer: Närke Stormaktsporter Kaggen (revisited in 2010)
Best Pumpclip or Label: Beer Here Hoptilicus
    Best UK Brewery: Harveys
    Best Overseas Brewery: Amager
