Here’s a fun game. It's called ‘If you had to…’ aka ‘Would you rather…’ aka 'What would you do if...' and so on. Just read the question and answer it!
This question comes in response to the Brewers Association Style Guide for 2009 which lists a whopping 138 different styles! 138?! That’s nuts! Check out the list.
If you had to... choose only one style of beer to drink for the rest of your life, and you only had one minute to decide, what would it be? Go! (Don’t try and pick one from the list, you’ll run out of time before you even pass the British styles!)
Right now my choice would be an American style IPA - they can be refreshing or warming, gluggers or sippers. And the big hops just leave me all chilled out.
ReplyDeleteEr, er, er.... DIPA is tempting, roasty stout wouldn't work all year round, pale ale not beefy enough when it's cold.... can't believe this but I'm plumping for a hoppy mild. Enough roast to itch in winter, enough hop to linger in summer, slakes a thirst, weak enough to drink all night without getting pished.
ReplyDeleteI'd go for either Herb & Spice Beer or Aged Beer as they are daftly wide, pointless, categories.
ReplyDeleteWithout a doubt, Australian Sparkling ale - but not strictly adhearing to the HB style guidelines which pretty much only apply to coopers pale and sparkling.
ReplyDeleteHaddonsman, I was toying with the DIPA but wanted something I could drink all night with killing myself or my tastebuds. Mild is a top shout, it's your all-star all-rounder.
ReplyDeleteBeer Nut, good call on the Herb & Spice and Aged beers - so wildly unspecific. And how is aged beer even a style?!
Tim, Australian Sparkling Ale is a very dubious style!! The description sounds like fizzy water! :)
Bud Light with a lemon wedge. Deliciously refreshing and sustainable.
ReplyDeleteBarley Wine... not long sessions, but good ones!
ReplyDeleteMy first thought (before I'd read any comments) was American Style Pale Ale... but could I live without ever having a dark beer again? Aaargh! Horrible game.
ReplyDeleteIt has to be stout, there really is no style of beer I enjoy more and actively hunt out.
ReplyDeleteIt would take me longer to get bored of American IPA than anything else but an angel on my shoulder is shouting "porter!".
ReplyDeleteIs it by any chance a big pink angel with flappy ears and a trunk?
ReplyDeleteBeer Nut,
ReplyDeleteI don't get the impression that you're taking this at all seriously.
Desperados - it's sweet, refreshing and gets the party started first time, every time!
ReplyDeleteZak, I've read a lot of excellent things that you've written about beer but I believe this to be your finest statement yet :D
ReplyDeleteSome of my finer work, no question.
ReplyDeleteI'll go one better. I've said it before and I'll say it again - if I could only drink one particular beer for the rest of my life it would be Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout. Style: DIPA.
ReplyDeleteHey GJD - good choice on both fronts. The first time I had the Brooklyn Black Choc I was physically moved!! What a beer!
